But it's not always easy ...

Fear & Anxiety

Speaking up takes practice. All too often we've spent a life time staying small, quiet, soothing others' nerves. We fear that speaking up will make us noticeable (yes!) and then criticized and judged.

It isn't polite to speak one's mind, to have strong opinions or take up 'too much' room.

The very thought of talking to people; work colleagues, family or strangers, can bring us out in a sweat! Not to mention the shaky knees, the racing heart or our voice that's turned suddenly squeaky, or quiet, or just ...weird.

Impostor Syndrome

Then there's all the intrusive thoughts and self criticism; who am I to talk about this? What am I doing talking in this space? Why would anybody listen to me?

Maybe I won't be taken seriously, I might look a fool, or worse still, everyone will be bored rigid!

Besides, there are so many people out there better than me. Let them do the speaking, have the ideas, put themselves in the spotlight. I can stay in my comfort zone and hope that one day I might get asked for my thoughts.

Brilliant women have hiding habits that prevent them from speaking up, taking up space, asking for what they want and need. It could be perfectionism, never getting it quite right. It could be the endless need for more validation, training, qualifications. Perhaps the need to do this before that (build a website before I start my business, get 2 years experience before I move up the ladder, lose 10lbs before I ask them out). However your hiding habits show up, they are holding you back and none more so than the inability to speak confidently and connect with others, take up space and shine, step in to the spotlight and own the room.
